Although organized American football dates back to the 1920s, it wasn't until 1970 that the format of the sport that hundreds and millions of fans across North America and beyond know and love today, was cemented.

Up until that time, professional football in the country was split between the National Football League and the American Football League. Already considered the most popular sport in the United States, when the respective leagues finally agreed to merge, American football quickly evolved into the juggernaut it is today.

Merger Created 2 NFL Conferences and 8 Divisions

The merger saw the creation of the NFL as we know it. Each season 32 teams compete in two conferences of 16 teams each - the American Football League and the National Football League. Each conference is split into four divisions - AFC North, AFC South, AFC West and AFC East, and NFC North, NFC South, NFC West and NFC East.
